Diana of Syracuse @Kaldorei_Life It wasn't always this way, its a recent thing. Even in WoD Ion was talking about subraces and his obvious examples were
Dark Iron Dwarves
Maghar Orcs
High Elves
Something got into their brains about one of those
vrynn Diana of Syracuse @Kaldorei_Life I still guarantee they looked at High Elves and thought 'No, the players will call us lazy, they're too similar, we have to differentiate the 'Alliance Blood Elf' option more than just eye color we gotta make them something else entirely'
They were wrong
gntlshrk vrynn @Kaldorei_Life They could have also done a slight tweak to things like how Nightborne are different from Night Elves if they were that concerned. Pandaren refute the 'they're too similar' line, Void Elves refute the 'there aren't enough of them' line, and their popularity speaks for itself.
vrynn Diana of Syracuse @Kaldorei_Life 100% - they could have gone the Dark Iron route ('they look too similar, give them fire beards' etc.) if they legit didn't want to make a whole new model (like the Kul'Tirans and Zandalari that came due to BFA) - like make the blue eyes glow or slap some tattoos on them
gntlshrk Diana of Syracuse @Kaldorei_Life Honestly on distinction the biggest let down about Maghar Orcs is they really don't capitalize on the WoD stuff enough. They could have brought industrial iron horde tech, more focus on their shadow priests, anything.
Instead its just 'zug zug honor and blood', in brown
