Delighted to get a video from Dave Suddaby on the Mullet today of the first Great Yellow Bumblebee of the season feeding on apple blossom, nearly three weeks earlier than last year

It was lovely to celebrate Irish Seed Savers

Nice to see this busy Common Carder Bumblebee pollinating apple blossom, helping to ensure a good crop later in the year 🌸🐝🍎🍏

An orange tip butterfly on a cuckoo flower beside our pond.
I wanted to photograph his beautiful orange tip wings but due to the cold weather he just wasn't moving. His inside wings are stunning too though.
Note to self! Must sow more cuckoo flowers! 💚

Seán Keane Arterial drainage played a big part too - straightening and dredging rivers destroyed a large chunk of aquatic habitat and removed substrate, vital for the development of so many insects. Many fish, birds and mammals depended on those insects and we dug them out of the rivers.

After a few days of dry weather it's time to set the hills ablaze, during the bird breeding season. Following decades of overgrazing the few ground nesting species clinging on to existence (red listed meadow pipit, skylark) are likely toast.....

Help restore native meadows by reducing mowing to just once a month

You don't need a big garden. You don't need to buy wildflower seed mixes. Real, native wildflowers are already in the soil, waiting for a chance to grow 🐝

A nice surprise on saturday was finding Andrena rosae at another Irish site, also in Co. Carlow. Two females were found, one was a dark specimen, the other was more typical-looking. The 'redder' female was busily foraging on Hawthorn and wasn't in the mood for being photographed!
