Incredibly, the placebo effect is (mostly) not real.

It is a result of statistical confusion. Whenever you have a group with extreme values, they tend to exhibit regression to the mean. Eg. on average, sick people tend to become more healthy over time.

The year is almost over, and NYE fireworks are just around the corner. So it's time to talk birds and fireworks! Thread 🧵👇

We have now published new work in ESA Frontiers looking at the effects of fireworks on birds, using weather radar and bird counts: doi.org/10.1002/fee.26…

Very excited to see this paper out in Wader Study!

How can we detect sex biases in samples, and why might they arise?

Great work on results from long-term (20 years!) ringing & resighting Black-tailed Godwits led by Rod Smith / Swale ringing group 🧵 1/6

Fabulous study from the IBED radar crew, led by Bart Hoekstra, showing massive disturbance of wintering birds by widespread New Year's Eve fireworks in the Netherlands.

Up to 10.000 more birds aloft than on normal winter nights, with disturbance up to 10km from fireworks!

Assuming a low cat density of 1 cat/km2, the total cat population in Teide National Park (Canary Islands) kills 257,739 vertebrates. Native species are particularly vulnerable to predation, with 166,249 reptiles & 5588 birds killed annually. link.springer.com/article/10.100… 🐈🐈‍⬛🦎🐦🐇🐀

The final results of the first survey for Portugal are now out! Alarming declines and contraction of a species once common in portuguese farming landscapes. Less than 250 breeding pairs, unfortunetely with no prospects to reverse these in the near future!

Important foraging and resting areas are only partly (ca. 50%) covered by the existing marine Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). Therefore, our results should be considered in any re-evaluation of the IBA borders.
