How telling is it that there is recruitment issue bc *checks notes* people applying for a public servant position dont want to be held accountable by the public?

If you are scared of oversight, then what was the reason for joining in the first place?

When I was reporting on how the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit habitually botches rape cases, an NYPD spokesperson told me I was harming sex crimes victims / discouraging them from coming forward by publicizing what goes on at the SVU. (The SVU is now under a DOJ investigation lol)

Yesterday, when I asked an NYPD spokesperson for her name, she told me that I should attribute basic facts about an arrest to “police sources.” When I again asked for her name, she told me to “have a nice day” and hung up.

This is one of the reasons why I never advocate for new &/or harsher penalties for anyone. Power will always wield those laws predominately against the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed, or those expressing opinions they don’t agree with.

In a just world with actual consequences for abuses of power, everyone involved here would be fired and barred from public service ever again.

Astounding how most Americans never learn at all in school about the Tulsa Race Massacre or the MOVE Bombing in Philadelphia. Mass acts of police enabled/led acts of terrorism against entire Black neighborhoods.

These attacks should be core to any U.S. history curriculum.

Today, the New Yorker published a long exploration of our landmark civil rights cases, which ask a simple question: can the government ban kids from visiting their mom and dad because they can't pay money bail and the jail wants to charge more for calls? newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…

One of the greatest acts of terrorism in U.S. history, and something left out of many contemporary U.S. history classes.

This is crazy. In 2 days we doubled our goal and then exceeded. Increased the goal now to $80,000 and we're almost there!!

People power. Love. Passion for freedom. Let's go!

This Mother’s Day nearly 150,000 mothers will spend the day apart from their children. 58% of all women in U.S. prisons are mothers. 80% of women in jails, including many who are incarcerated awaiting trial simply bc they can’t afford bail. Read: prisonpolicy.org/blog/2023/03/0…

I don’t support the use of weapons being used against anyone—& don’t support or celebrate any kind of violence. I do wonder whether NYPD Chief McCarthy personally experiencing the horror of the chemical weapons he uses on civilians will change his mind about their continued use.

Pure evil. Cartoonishly evil. Dude gives out fake money to people without homes so when they use it, “theyll get arrested, so I’m helping clean up the street.”
