Facts and feelings. The economic burden of Ukraine aid is more than manageable for the US, EU, UK.

As Martin Wolf put it so well: 'The argument that this is unaffordable is ridiculous. These sums are dwarfed by those spent on energy subsidies in Europe and on earlier US wars.'

In Berlin everybody now seems to be allowed to run a package station side hustle. Night shops, bicycle repairmen - I even saw someone distributing packages from their living room window. Very liberal and anarchic for tightly regulated Germany.

You can’t have China telling Europe — or Europee, it seems — what’s what. As for accusation that the US is prolonging a war in Europe, try listening to what the Europeans have told you. That Russia’s war in Ukraine is an existential threat and they’re delighted by US aid pack.

“The US shutting China out already will undoubtedly benefit the EU, as long as the US remains open to European imports,” said Sander Tordoir at the CER think-tank. “The EU is ahead of the US on green tech manufacturing and exports.”

Important point by Sander Tordoir - The EU is biased towards using tariffs as its main industrial policy tool (though WTO compatibility is still needed). The issue is that, from a climate perspective, a big tariffs-small subsidies approach seems like the worst of all options.

The leading Dutch business association backs equipping the EU with more financial means to remain globally competitive.

But the new government - including pro-business VVD - instead wants draconian cuts on Dutch EU budget contributions.

Start-of-year price resets made Euro zone inflation look worse than it really was in early 2023 (red). That's true again now, only the level of core inflation is already a lot lower than this time last year. The Euro zone is heading for deflation unless the ECB eases big-time...

Myth: The IRA is super protectionist! The US is discriminating against foreign firms!

Reality: Since the IRA, electric vehicle imports of foreign made cars & batteries to the US have surged

In the EV trade war, this chart from Chad Brown, via a paper by Shahin Vallée Albert Pinto is so telling. The US shutting out China, whilst remaining open to EU exports, is benefitting European car exporters. EU EV exports to China meanwhile are growing only very tepidly.

The equivalent panic headline for the Dutch rather than the Danish economy would read something like 'XYZ debuts $95 million EUV machines at 75% discount to ASML'. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
