If you can’t imagine laws in the hands of different political parties, you probably shouldn’t be writing laws.

Significant implications for Alberta local democracies:

If passed, province can:
- remove any councillor for 'public interest'
- amend / repeal any municipal bylaws

Also:
- municipal political parties allowed
- union/corporate donations allowed

it’s wild that coastal cities have spent years debating if YIMBY policies will lower rents, and Austin just… did it

they streamlined permitting, upzoned most of the city, and eliminated parking mandates. Tons of housing is going up and rents are plummeting.

YIMBY policies work

At a time when Albertans are struggling with so many real issues, the UCP have just introduced Bill 20, all about meddling in municipal politics.

Bill 20 allows the UCP to remove any councillor, permits political parties at the municipal level, and more.

Who is asking for this?

I don’t think there was a clear cut winner tonight, but I think Kathleen Ganley, Naheed Nenshi, and Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse stood out the most during my viewing.

All I know is that I’m excited to see these five on stage again in Calgary in a couple weeks!

I’ll see you there 😉 /fin

I think Kathleen Ganley will win the leadership. And I think she can beat Smith. She is confident, clear, calm with a lot of skill in debate. I think Albertans would prefer a fight with teeth but not bite.

She was smart to offer Nenshi a seat if she wins - appeasing.

Tonight's leaders debate in was actually a pleasure to watch. Thoughtful, precise, intelligent answers by every candidate. I really enjoyed hearing Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse speak, very impressed by her! Kathleen Ganley talks common sense, and I liked her closing remarks.

Elections have consequences, and the last provincial election may have been the most consequential in generations with the election of a far right, illiberal party
