3 years ago I paused to take stock of #TolstoysTalesofTrump , never imagining that the “master,” whose original reign ended in apparent ignominy, might one day stage a comeback. Marx remarked that history repeats itself—first as tragedy, then as farce. Perhaps it is the reverse.
Tomorrow, Jan 19, 8pm, I will be giving a talk at the Catholic Worker about my dad, Daniel Ellsberg (Memorial) . (This was postponed during a monsoon rainstorm last fall.) Looking forward to it.

“Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter, but beautiful, struggle for a new world. This is the calling of the sons of God, and our brothers wait eagerly for our response.” Martin Luther King Jr. my reflection in Give Us This Day

My friend Mev Puleo died of a brain tumor on Jan 12 1996. She had dedicated her life to documenting the life, struggles, and humanity of the poor—“to revere the human spirit and bridge the distance between persons.” My reflections in Give Us This Day

Galileo died on Jan 8 1642. He believed that doctrine could not be in conflict with nature or reality, as our comprehension of reality changed. My reflection in Give Us This Day
On the feast of Epiphany the master gave a rousing speech to his army of defenders, “we lucky few, we band of brothers, for all who shed blood for me are my brothers. I love you! Remember this day!” he cried before returning to the manor for Executive Time. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
“Et tu, Mikhail? the master said, sadly. The plan had been for his manservant to offer himself as a human sacrifice, and in return the master would adopt Mikhail’s cow and raise it as his own. But then someone got “cold feet.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Long before studying the art of the deal, the master had dabbled in magic and the “dark arts.” How gladly he would now sacrifice half his estate to have paid closer attention to those lessons. But where could he find an eye of Newt on short notice? #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Addressing his manservant Mikhail, the master noted that there came a time in the life of every manservant when he had to ask himself how he expected and wanted history to remember him. “This is that moment,” he warned. “Capisce?” #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Apart from his inheritance and his history of bribery and fraud, the master was proud that everything he had achieved in life was a result of hard work and positive thinking. Many people were saying he was a model for youth about pursuing their dreams. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
