I’ve spent a lot of time staring at leaves this spring but the latest reward was this mine of Eriocrania salopiella (Yellow-headed Spring Jewel) on birch yesterday. My 7th Eriocraniidae species of the year - just one (E. sparrmannella) to find next month to complete the set

Daytime searching still proving more fruitful than light-trapping for interesting moths for me so far this spring. A few recent Devon finds included Epinotia sordidana larva in spun Alder leaf, Scalloped Hook-tip roosting and rolled birch leaf containing Archips xylosteana larva.

Met this critter while moth trapping in south Devon last night - looks like a glow worm but not sure if it can be identified to species level? I’ll put it on iRecord if someone can confirm the ID please John Walters Ashleigh Whiffin

Moth Monday: 🤩Cydia conicolana
(Pine Nut Moth) lives on pine trees (its caterpillars feed in pine cones) & is mainly found in southern & eastern England. As you can see it’s just another drab, boring moth 😂 (📷Patrick Clement)

Are you a moth-trapper with a spare 10 minutes? If so, please fill in the following survey aiming to understand moth-ers and their relationship with insects in traps 🐝🦋 Please share! qualtrics.ucl.ac.uk/jfe/form/SV_55…

Excellent new paper by Jamie C. Weir challenging simplistic expectations that climate-driven phenological mismatch between plants and moth herbivores will be detrimental to populations 👏🏻 🍃🐛

Making your garden a little bit wilder works - last summer I found dozens of Cinnabar caterpillars happily munching away on a Ragwort plant that had popped up in a corner. Today, a freshly-emerged adult on the lawn a few feet away😍 wild-spaces.co.uk

Time-lapse of a Sundew Plume Buckleria paludum caterpillar feeding on Sundew - I love the way it 'sucks up' the red filaments

Good mothing on Sunday evening at a local site and the first time this year I’ve had >50 species. Highlights included Bordered White, Birch Mocha, a huge & pristine Puss Moth & Rhyacionia pinivorana. Also Grey Birch, Square Spot, Seraphim & Alder Kitten

Moth Monday: Alder Kitten (Furcula bicuspis) seems to be having a good spring all of a sudden. Having only previously seen one in 20+ years of moth recording, I saw two last night (one in my garden and one at another site). Are others finding the same?

Not a great photo as I only had my phone with me, but thrilled to bump into Geoff while looking for micros this morning. Lots of Silver Y around too.

There's still time to join the PoMS 1 km square trapping survey, if you live near to a red square on the map. Info at ukpoms.org.uk/one-km-square-… & drop us a line for more details if interested. Thanks to our fantastic volunteers who are visiting all the blue squares this month!

Delighted to find Hysterophora maculosana Small Bluebell Beauty on a lovely lunchtime ramble. Only the second time I’ve ever seen this springtime species & at a new Devon site for it.

Moth Monday: Dog's Tooth (Lacanobia suasa) has a patchy distribution in the UK, with evidence of recent decline. It is often found near the coast in marshes and grasslands, but also occurs on moors, farmland & in some urban areas. (📷Keith Tailby)
