On 8 April 1141, Empress Matilda was declared ruler of England & given the title 'Lady of the English'. She would have been England's first official female ruler, yet just before her coronation the citizens of London rose up against her & she was forced to flee.

9 April 1483 The usual date given for the death of Edward IV, elder brother of Richard III. It was sudden & unexpected. The Croyland Chronicler said "He was affected neither by old age nor by any known kind of disease which would not have seemed easy to cure in a lesser person"

Today is the feast of St Guthlac of Crowland, one of my favourite saints. Here's the abbey where for many centuries his shrine stood and his memory was venerated — it's now the site of Crowland's parish church and still very much the heart of this extraordinary place.

I'm giving a talk Horncastle History & Heritage Society next Weds 17th April on Folklore Around Horncastle & Woodhall Spa collected by Rev James Alpass Penny Vicar of Stixwould in the early 1900s. Goodness me, there are so many books written on the subject of Marcher Lordships (and their castles) Which one to buy? I'm thinking Forgotten Castles of Wales and the Marches by Paul R Davis Any other suggestions, I'm interested in the smaller/ruined castles. #penmark #fonmon

In the Heneage chapel at Hainton in Lincolnshire is the alabaster monument of Sir George Heneage (1522-1595). It is probably by Garrat Johnson of Southwark. It is a very fine monument, despite losing one of his feet and the head of the Heneage greyhound at his feet.
