Why have Ukrainians had a smoother transition and warmer welcome in the U.S. than others?

Uniting for Ukraine arrivals can work legally immediately after coming here.

They have sponsors.

The first wave was eligible for benefits, like food stamps.

They have bipartisan support.

It's been 38 years since Congress's last comprehensive amnesty, so there are still millions of long-term undocumented immigrants. Many have been here for decades, living and working without trouble. Despite all the attention paid to the border, this population is still in need.

My latest is about a proposal, under discussion for months at the White House, to create a program similar to DACA for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens. The WH is looking for measures it can take to please advocates after an expected border EO wsj.com/politics/polic…

NEW—

• Like with other key allies, the Biden Govt has been shy in criticizing AMLO’s anti-democratic antics

• But in it’s new Human Rights Report, the Department of State openly highlights AMLO’s attacks vs the Supreme Court, the press, human rights defenders & Mexican civil society

Amidst huge SCOTUS cases about Trump, abortion, etc. plz don’t forget DOS v. Muñoz, an important immigration case being argued tomorrow. SCOTUS has been _very_ hostile to constitutional claims in immigration cases, and Muñoz is another chance to do real damage. Strict Scrutiny Podcast

On this day in 2000: in a dramatic pre-dawn raid, armed immigration agents seized 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy at the center of a custody dispute, from his relatives’ home in Miami and sent back to Cuba.

UndocuBlack immigrants and their stories are excluded from mainstream immigration narratives, rendering them invisible in debates and policies that shape their lives. This isn't just an oversight; it's an erasure caused by anti-Blackness that is dangerous.

Setting aside that a entry through parole is *by definition* not an 'unlawful entry,' I'll remind you that even the Trump administration emphatically told migrants 'please go to the ports of entry' and (falsely) represented to Congress that they were increasing access to ports.

TRUMP, 2020: I hereby sign an executive order banning TikTok in 45 days if it isn't sold, given threat posed by China. (The order gets blocked in court.)

'Granting undocumented spouses parole in place would make many of them immediately eligible for work permits. Perhaps more significantly, it would clear the administrative cobwebs preventing spouses from being granted green cards.'

Jose Franco was locked in an ICE detention center for over 4 year because of his serious mental disability—a travesty. An ACLU class action lawsuit on his behalf forced the government to provide lawyers to people like him. He later won his case, and now he's become a US citizen!
