Fire in the heavens. An unbelievably wickedly bitter cold wind rushes in over the churning sea to meet me on the cliff top... but oh my, this glorious September sunset πŸ’›

A *fabulous* resource: the Coilltean Caillte/Forgotten Woodlands project has mapped 15,000 Scottish place-names indicating presence of trees/forest in the land. Gaelic as ecological memory-trove. Map, pronunciation guide, stories etc. here: storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/9b790d… πŸ‘Ainmean-Γ€ite na h-Alba

This is a stunning and wonderful project and resource. There are so many 'lost' woodlands in this part of Scotland. One I love is below a small, bare crag - grove of the apples. Not a tree or an apple in sight. All long gone.

This evening's setting sun, sliced and diced by biting nor'easterlies and sharp silvers of cloud. View across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides 😊

I'm overwhelmed with wonderful messages about Windswept. Thanks 2 everyone who've emailed/DM'd. Slowly but surely I'm trying to reply... If you're in the Highlands, I'm talking about my book & showing photos at the Nairn Festival this aft. It'd be magical to see/meet you there 😊

Home from the fabulous Nairn Festival to find we'd missed all the sun & dramatic sunsets. A haar was rushing in to greet us. But the young crofters had cut the hay meadows! Hay making has begun!!! Now we pray for the good weather to continue! #Windswept published by William Collins Books

A haar flowed into the valley this morning. For hours mists & wraiths have roamed the croft, the only sounds ravens kronking & cattle calling from the hills. How different the world seems on such a day. How utterly magical & mysterious. View from the top gate over the meadows.

Finally the haar clears. Mists shred in the hills. Everywhere is calm and quiet as if something extraordinary is about to happen. Views at 19.00h across South Erradale and upriver to the Torridon mountains: Baosbhein (875m) and Beinn Alligin (986m).

Well, it's a howling Windswept and boisterous day for sure. Gannets diving, dolphins jumping, gusts shoving me about, squalls galloping in across the Minches. View towards Skye from the old strainer post, my go-to place of comfort, especially on days like this 😊

Great big mucky squalls are blowing in from the north today. This one was particularly grand. View from our front gate, along the wee road to the far end of South Erradale and on to distant Baosbhein, dwarfed by the fast-rising tumults of cloud.

🧡Our botanist, Iain Macdonald shares some exciting news for one of Scotland's rarest flowers: "This has been a really exciting project to be involved in.Β I’m looking forward to further work on this rare and beautiful pinewood flower.”

A sky the same colours as the fire in our stove. Yes, it's that cold. There's snow on the high summits and a biting wind off the sea. Ah! September. You have chased summer away to the west for sure...

The wind has dropped yet I hear waves pounding the shore. The heavens have opened to reveal their secret colours. A shooting star brushes my cheek. The grasses sigh. This precious, delightful night is filled with joy and sorrow.
