Today we're sending love to all of the Moms who've had abortions, the Moms who will, and the people who will be Moms on their own terms one day because of their abortions.

7/ If you genuinely want to cover abortion in the US ethically and truthfully and you don't understand why this is serious: slow down, make some calls, and do some reading. I KNOW NEWS MOVES FAST. We can do this without causing undue harm.

5/ Abortion clinics are centers of care. Indie clinics are especially under-resourced and will need time to vet, prep, and host reporters. Patients do NOT sign up for exposure by seeking care. I can not believe I'm typing this: PRESS, DO NOT JUST SHOW UP AT A CLINIC.

4/ There are many people who would be very happy to talk to reporters about providing, having, and/ or supporting abortion care. Let us help you create an ethically reported piece.

3/ People seeking abortion care deserve privacy & safety. Whether or not you are actually filming/ photographing them, seeing a news van in the parking lot can be invasive and scary.

2/ The people who work at abortion clinics are likely willing to talk to you, but you MUST call them first. In addition to the fact that they're actively caring for patients, providers receive serious threats & violence daily. Let them vet you, schedule your visit, & prepare.

I can not believe I have to say this but: if you are a reporter covering , do NOT just show up to an abortion clinic. Especially not with a camera. This is a serious privacy and safety concern for both patients and providers.

It can be scary to hear that Texans are being harassed because they traveled out of state for an abortion.

To be clear: it is not against the law to travel for an abortion.

Two truths:

Ex-partners are weaponizing the law to target abortion seekers.

And, no one should have to fear harassment or punishment for their abortion, whether they traveled out of state or self-managed their abortion.

There’s no “previously unreported” badge of honor that is worth putting someone at risk for retaliation, harassment. This is exactly what abusers and their anti-abortion lawyer want.

Journalist who do this are putting survivors at risk for no material benefit to others who could experience the same harassment. Yes, they might know they are not alone, but you’re not helping them get support any faster.

It feels digenous as hell to report survivors stories—likely against their consent—for “the public good.” AND in that same story refuse to mention any resources where survivors could get legal help.

Because after these stories, abusers in Texas know exactly who to go to.

It’s really disappointing to see journalists prioritize getting a “scoop” over the safety of survivors and people who’ve had abortions in Texas.

I wish some reporters would put survivors and people who have abortions’s safety and humanity over their scoop. While you’re on to your next article, they’re dealing with the fall out. They may know what’s best for their lives, and that includes not making their case public.
