But dishonest (or disingenuous?) in omitting how it has done trade deals that could lower standards! (As George Eustice acknowledged when no longer Secretary of State for Enviro, Food & Rural Affairs!)

Still no Land Use Framework (England). This would be surreal if it was not so stupid. Politics of land use are of paramount importance (climate, water, food, biodivrsity, access). UK Government ducks it having promised it for a long time. What is land for? committees.parliament.uk/publications/4…

Why should we worry about ? Should we stop buying certain foods? 🍇🥐🍩

Good paper just out from Faculty of Public Health Food SIG on the public health case for planting more fruit and nut trees in orchards, woods, towns, hedges. UK has low number and should plant and eat more fruit and nuts. fph.org.uk/media/ytij1puu… This is a 'win' for both human and ecosystems health.

dire State of Rivers 2024 rept on UK & Irish rivers. Using EU Water Directive Framework standards, in 2022 only 15% English, 31% N Ireland, 42% Ireland, 44% Wales, 57% Scotland were in good ecological health. 62% English causes were farm, 54% Water Cos. theriverstrust.org/rivers-report-…

I simply ask: is this really necessary? Rice is a key world grain but also at risk of climate change (see Saud, Wang et al 2022 or Schonhart 2021). Why put cultured meat in it? Might be whizzo science but does it address civil food resilience? Who gains? nature.com/articles/d4158…

word 'resilience' is much applied to food systems. Jane Lloyd & colleagues have begun nailing down what it means in practice. New paper on what 4 govts (Aus, NZ, USA, Sweden) do/ don't do. Some work on food climate resilience, less on other issues. Read! doi.org/10.1186/s12889…

Indeed important evidence. Good study. Good tax. Could UK SDIL (sugar tax) be ratcheted up? How do we remove more hidden sugar from processed foods? Tax ? Meanwhile too many people on low income cannot afford dental care or even have access to a NHS dentist.

I speak at British Science Association (ex BAAS) this pm to give thoughts on why even affluent countries must prepare and improve civil food resilience (ahead of my forthcoming report). UK illustrates hidden dependencies, lack of planning, and over-reach of food system impacts.
