In this article, Anna Kyriazi & I argue that referendum promises shouldn't just be seen as an outcome of Euroscepticism, but a cause of it. We retrace the road to Brexit, tracking why enough MPs made the fateful switch from 'EU brake' to 'EU exit' to force David Cameron's hand.
We think there are a few broader lessons about British and EU politics at play here! A big thank you to the supportive team Political Studies Review , Tom McCrae Hunter for his incredible dataset, Joris Frese for his help checking our coding, and Solid Research Project European Research Council (ERC) for their support.
