Having fun with tilt sensors, LEDs, googly eyes and lots of stickers 😊

These tilt-activated LEDs are made by kids at two schools in Delft. I used a larger piece of wood this time, which made it easier for kids to reliably connect the tilt switch with the tape in the circuit.

I used my old plates again this week ( I played with them when I was a kid) to make funny robot cars with kids during workshops in Leiden and Rijswijk. These robot cars with their characters always make me smile 🥰

walking robot with an animated mouth.

The 🤖 talks by making a funny sound and when you scare the 🤖 by making a loud sound it walks backwards (or at least tries to) and has a startled face 😮

Lots of coding options with MakeCode, from simple to pretty advanced.

spirograph drawing machine

Making all kinds of drawings by changing the position of the LEGO beams and/or the pen. I also changed the ratio between the speed of the two continuous using code. And I made simple spirals using a 270 degrees position servo.

Kids enjoyed making their own controllers for games today. After connecting their controller to a they had a lot of fun playing Flappy bird and Pong and sending messages in Morse code.

🐥Nobots and baby robots 👶

Some cute robots made this week by kids during my workshops. Powered by the . Making these robots is a fun way to learn about 270 degrees position servos.

Wobblebots, powered by the

I went to three schools in Delft to make wobblebots. You can see some cool ones made by kids in this YouTube video:

Kids made some cool tilt-activated LEDs today. I decided not to use a paper towel roll, like I showed in an earlier tweet, but to use a piece of wood instead. Worked pretty well, although getting the tilt switch to reliably connect with the tape in the circuit can be a challenge.

🖍️Looking for a fun simple project for kids who are new to the ? They can turn a few pieces of LEGO and a geekservo into a simple drawing machine that's easy to code with MakeCode for the micro:bit.

Looking for a way to display numbers like 22, 55 and 73 on the screen without scrolling?

You can add the WhaleySans Font extension to your Microsoft MakeCode projects, an idea from David Whale (micro:bit wizard).

See it in action in this YT video of a CBBC escape room: youtu.be/4ZinH3tybVU

🤖 Funny robot performing some tasks 🤖

The LEGO figure behind the handlebar is made by Thijs and Otis during one of my micro:bit/LEGO workshops.

I'm using the Wukong board of ELECFREAKS for four servomotors and the Game controller of Kitronik as remote control.

💡Tilt-activated LED💡

Turning a paper towel roll into a tilt lamp turns out to be pretty easy with a cheap tilt switch (SW-520D) and woven conductive tape of pimoroni.

I hope kids aged 6 to 11 will be able to make this. Maybe I need to help the young ones with the battery.

wobblebots

I finally found a way to make these funny creatures with a large group of kids. (My wooden version wasn't reusable and the LEGO Spike hub is too expensive.)

frames and don't always align correctly, but here it works fine using two gears.
