Trade unions who supported the manic rush to Net Zero on the basis that 'Don't worry; the green revolution will throw up new jobs' really need to start quickly reassessing their position. The events at Port Talbot compel it.

Yes, the mad rush to Net Zero is a factor in the job losses at Port Talbot. But our manufacturing industry has been neglected by successive governments for decades. Worth reading this piece on the subject from 2016 by former Labour heavyweight Bryan Gould.theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Time was I got excited over new TV or film projects - now I just get a sinking feeling as you know they will ruin it with wokeness - just one long lecture from writers and producers who think they are better than everyone else

Nato military chief says, “We are preparing for a conflict with Russia.” This kind of sabre-rattling is deeply irresponsible and helpful to no-one. In these febrile times, we need serious diplomats, not hotheads. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/202…

Normally when a government is so despised, voters are ultra-keen for an election to take place so they can kick that government out, and the opposition rides to power on a wave of optimism (think 1997). Today, there is loathing of Tories but no enthusiasm for Labour. Weird times.

I think many will identify with this. There were always pockets of appalling customer service within industry; but outsourcing to call centres 6,000 miles away, working from home, ‘computer says no’ bureaucracy, and a general couldn’t-care-less mentality have made it widespread.

I’m not sure what’s worse: this appalling McCarthyite behaviour from Labour, or that Labour can’t even see how completely insane this looks to the vast, vast majority of people

From Maurice Glasman’s (founder of Blue Labour) book ‘Blue Labour: The Politics of the Common Good’ (in the chapter ‘The meaning of socialism’). Blue Labour is accused by some of being ‘Blairite’ or ‘closet Tories’. As these passages prove, they couldn’t be more wrong. ⬇️

'Almost 9 in 10 constituencies in British politics have a preference for lower immigration and tighter controls. Only in 12% of seats is there a majority for more migration and relaxed controls'

Mass higher education has failed on two fronts - it no longer meaningfully boosts post-grad income, and the vast majority of degrees have little to no academic merit. University isn’t even ‘fun’ anymore, thanks to the move to remote learning.

Tony Benn diary entry for 9 June 2000. Agrees to consider writing occasionally for the Sun because “you are getting through to a working-class audience that is potentially Thatcherite but should be socialist”. There’s a lot to be said for that approach. Same with GB News.

'Under huge pressure and in the face of appalling abuse, this MP stood her ground on a fundamental issue close to her heart and the hearts of many others. She is a credit to her party and to parliament. If only there were more like her.' My latest column⬇️ paulembery.com/p/a-victory-fo…
