Bats and dolphins evolved echolocation in the same way (down to the molecular level).

An analysis revealed that 200 genes had independently changed in the same way and this is an extreme example of convergent evolution.

Fun fact: the Portuguese man o’ war is not actually a jellyfish! Instead, it's a species of siphonophore, which is a group closely related to jellyfish. Like other siphonophores, it's a colonial organisms, made up of zooids.

“According to NOAA’s best estimates, that pace is expected to speed up dramatically.
It took about 80 years for the first foot. The second one will only take 30 years. The next, 20 years. And Florida could see the next foot in merely a decade after that.” phys.org/news/2024-05-s…

This is a diamondback terrapin and they're cool as shell.

Aptly named for their diamond-like markings, these turtles call coastal estuaries of the northeast and southern U.S. their home. 🧵

Hurricane season looks to potentially heat up the 1st/ 2nd week of June. The overarching reason is a broad rising air over Indonesia methodically moving eastward into the Caribbean. MJO - it’s an oscillation that traverses the Earth over many weeks. It tends to enhance activity.

The news of microplastics in all human testicles has generated a lot more coverage than the news of microplastics in all human breast milk and all human placentas.

Happy ! While we don't tend to see many sea turtles at the depths we explore, sometimes we are treated to a 🐢 sighting when the ROVs are closer to the surface, like this inquisitive turtle from off the Galapagos Islands who swam by to say hello!

Happy World Turtle Day!🐢

Did you know that marine turtles are among the oldest surviving reptiles in the world - and have been swimming in our oceans for more than 150 million years?! This is why we have to protect their home!

This is outlandish. The Tropical Atlantic Ocean heat content is so far above normal it’s now normal for Mid August.
The stored potential energy in the Atlantic is unreal this year, building on top of last year’s absurdity. 1/

Here's a mystery we're still trying to solve. What are these? They're roughly ½' across, hard plastic, always yellow and are washing up on beaches in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, along the south coast of the UK, in Ireland, France and probably elsewhere too.
