I take a taxi to the airport in Washington with a sense of relief. The aid package for Ukraine passed the House of Representatives, where it was blocked for eight months. Most likely, it will be voted on in the Senate on Tuesday, but there will be no problems there.

This morning Russian forces hit the centre of Chernihiv, a city rich in medieval and early modern monuments. Lives were lost and injuries abound. We petition the US Congress and the EU to send sufficient air defence systems and weapons for Ukraine to defend its people and lands.

At least 11 people have been killed, 22 wounded as a result of a triple Russian Iskander missile attack on the city centre of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine. Ukraine urgently needs more air defence to protect its civilians
