Living outside the US for any extended time provides insight into its greatest flaws but also its merits.

There are so many valid criticisms of the US - its foreign militarism and domestic repression - but its foundational rights and aspirations remain worthy of celebration.

Love of anything - including a country - isn't expressed by blind obedience, uncritical devotion or mindless adoration.

Critique and dissent are indispensable to progress in any realm, and that's why it's so crucial those be defended.
