New WCS Canada 💚 blog on whales:
'In many ways the history of whale conservation reflects the increasing challenges facing wild species across the country. Our past efforts to solve key issues are being challenged by an increasingly complex web of threats.'

I wasn’t the only one enjoying this warm spring evening.

First snakes of the year. Common garter snake and a lovely little northern watersnake.

Our attitudes towards whales show the massive shift in how Canadians value wildlife.

1953 goal: increase harvest of beluga whales to render into dogfood

2024 goal: reunited an orphaned orca calf with its extended family

Updated IUCN Red List categories & criteria includes guidance for incorporating climate change into extinction risk assessments.

Very helpful WCS Canada 💚 where we're working to conserve some of the most rapidly changing wildlife habitats on the planet.

Trees are essential to our Canadian economy, well-being, biodiversity & identity.

But did you know that almost 1 in 4 of Canada's tree species are in trouble?

Today I saw:
Wildlife saved by conservation Ontario Natural Resources and Forestry
Lands protected by conservation Bruce Trail Conservancy
Waters made cleaner by conservation Conservation Halton

Conserving nature can be arduous & frustrating but at its core their should be joy that we are creating a better future.

The role of Red List Ecosystems (RLE) in the Global Biodiversity Framework

Challenges for Canada
- we don't have an ecosystem classification system
- few RLE have been identified

KBA Canada 💚 is identifying threatened ecosystems & will help fill this gap

I think we need more cities and towns to adopt rare plants as floral emblems and advocate for their conservation.

Interesting analysis of extinction risk based on the fossil record.

As habitats shrink, the chances of a species becoming extinct rapidly increases.

To stop current extinction we need to stop shrinking habitats.

Status of Bald Eagle in ON in 1908. Even before DDT, it had declined because of shooting & loss of big trees for nesting.

It's recovery is evidence of hope that conservation works.

Halting habitat loss is our challenge today & the focus of our efforts WCS Canada 💚 KBA Canada 💚

The annual value of ecosystem services of freshwater lakes globally is USD 1.3–5.1 trillion

Canada has 60% of the world's lakes

Natural capital valuations are imperfect, but needed in our decisions about the ecosystems we chose to protect or to destroy
