I went home after my thesis defense and visa was held up due to 'security screening'. Had no idea when/if visa will come, waited a couple of months & told my future postdoc mentor, I'm not coming. This stress was a constant in my life for ~20 years until naturalization.

Coming from a country with a very restrictive passport, it has been (and will be) so mentally and economically stressing to apply for fellowships or just attending conferences abroad. Thankfully, I have had very supportive mentors, but I know that's not the case for everyone.
