Wonder how Chancellor David C. Banks, who talks frequently about (+ stakes some of his argument for extension of mayoral ctrl on) his unusual level of communication + openness w/ elected officials, feels about this policy.

One interesting tidbit from the NYS Education Department report on mayoral control Mayor Eric Adams has come out swinging against today: even compared to other districts w/ a mayoral control system, NYC's 'grants the most power to the mayor:' nysed.gov/sites/default/…

Truly amazing the quality of work the talented reporters + staff of the DN put out every day despite watching basic newsroom structures like editing disappear beneath their feet.

But it's not fair, or sustainable. They, and the city they cover, deserve better.

Worth noting the city is also rolling out new scanners for schools that similarly purport to detect weapons w/o requiring students to take off their backpacks...but apparently they don't trust the tech enough to actually let kids keep their bags on: chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/0…

In other districts, companies/officials often publicly present these products + there's a public back + forth (see Akron, OH, for ex: youtube.com/watch?v=kSUN0y…)

In NYC, the public didn't even learn about this contract until after it was inked, let alone get to weigh in.
