I’m the dude who was locked in a basement for 7 years making Super Mario Bros 5 in Mario Maker 2 (0G9-XN4-FNF). Also Super Mario Bros Remix (90V-9C9-3PF).

As my Mario Maker creative blockade continues, I recently took a deep dive into the Mario Advance games. Now I have decided to check out NSMBUD once again. It’s my first revisit to the “New” series in a long time.

Boo’s first appearance was in SMB3 (1990) where he was originally called Boo Diddly. In SMW (1991) he was referred to as a Boo Buddy. It wasn’t until Super Mario Land 2 in 1992 that he officially became just plain ol’ Boo.

In Super Mario Advance 2 (aka SMW for GBA), playing as Luigi slightly adjusts the gameplay.

• Luigi jumps higher & slides more (typical Luigi stuff here)
• when hitting a 10-coin box, all coins jump out at once
• fireballs bounce higher
• Yoshi spits, doesn’t swallow

Here’s a good example of “screen crunch” in the GBA version of SMB2. It’s the same screenshot for each console (NES, SNES & GBA). Notice how much closer and zoomed in you are while playing the GBA version.

My Switch carrying case holds 5 extra cartridges. These are in constant rotation. I always have Zelda on hand, just in case. What games are currently in your carrying case?

After beating the game, you unlock the Yoshi Challenge. There's 2 eggs to find on each course, hidden somewhere inside the potion doors.

Blue Shell Mario remains one of the best power-ups in a 2D Mario game. When Mario runs at top speed he turns into a moving Koopa shell, a move known as the Shell Dash. So satisfying to use. It only made an appearance in New Super Mario Bros. (DS)

These white squids weren’t always known as Bloopers. Starting back in the original Super Mario Bros, they were known as Bloobers. That continued until Paper Mario (N64) in 2000. The first mainline Mario title to officially switch to Bloopers was Super Mario Sunshine (GC) in 2002.
