Absolutely shocking that the Joburg City Library has been closed since 2021! As a young kid eSoweto who lived in our library Emndeni, that place was a museum of possibilities, it allowed a nerd like me to make friends, join the library committees & volunteer. This is an injustice

Who shuts libraries? @MyANC City of Joburg is there an explanation that is rational and reasonable?

Joburg Library closure since 2021, symbolic of rising anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge, anti-reading culture. Lack of reading, anti-knowledge, anti-intellectualism, constraint to democracy, growth, undermines state capacity, foster populism, ignorant, slogan-based discourse.

A number of demonstrators are outside the Joburg Library today calling for the library's reopening. The library has been closed since 2021.
