Ill health - physical & mental - remains by far the biggest cause of school absence in the UK (and globally).

We must not lose compassion. It's not about numbers- it's people. Every child and absence has a story but we shouldn't routinely doubt the authenticity of illness.

What does an 'unauthorised' absence mean?

It means:
'We don't accept the reasons given.'
'We don't approve of the absence.'

To parents, it says:
'The absence is not legitimate.'
'We don't understand.'
'We don't support you.'
Or, worst of all,
'We don't believe you!'

What does an 'authorised' absence mean?

To the school, it means:
'We accept the reasons given.'
'We approve of the absence.'

To the parents, it says:
'The absence is legitimate.'
'We understand.'
'We support you.'
and, best of all,
'We believe you!'

Repeated or continuous absences (highly likely in the case of anxiety and mental illness) can result in legal sanctions which never address the child's underlying problems.

This is particularly true of (but not exclusive to) absences relating to mental health.

The 'unauthorised' coding often puts incredible pressure and worry on families who are already suffering - pressure to get their child in school...worry about potential consequences...
