#IBD is defined by gut inflammation (causative factor) so companies successfully developed drugs to treat that.
#IBS is defined only by symptoms so we mostly get drugs to treat symptoms.
To make progress in #IBS , we need to move away from just symptoms!

April is #IBSawarenessmonth . I am grateful for the having the opportunity to treat these patients and for being part of a research effort to help. This is a disease that affects so many. We will be posting facts and events all month.

Should GLP1-RAs (e.g. Ozempic) be stopped prior to elective endoscopic procedures?

YES!

Our study in Gastroenterology shows GLP1-RAs increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia after endoscopy by 33%

There's not enough data on #SIBO / #IMO in younger patients. We need to expand the REIMAGINE study to begin to recruit people <18 years old. They are suffering and we need more research.

Looks like some don't get the point. We need advocacy and funding so these conditions are respected and science/cause-effect work is enabled. No science, no answers...besides the old default answers.

Fun fact. There are about 528 million #twitter users. That means there are 52 million people with #IBS / #SIBO on Twitter suffering with unpredictable abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea/constipation. New treatments are coming!

#DDW2024 abstract acceptances came out last week. Will share first data on new drug for #SIBO / #IBS and the role of hydrogen sulfide (and where these bugs live). Can't wait!

64% of symptomatic patients with H pylori infection have concomitant #SIBO or #IMO .

Patients with H pylori with IMO or SIBO have more severe symptoms and respond well to H pylori treatment.

Patients with #IBS / #SIBO have unpredictable bloating, pain and diarrhea. Name a profession where this would be inconvenient. A pilot? A teacher? A stay at home parent? A high rise construction worker? A football player in gear on the field? And still so little funding for this!

The small intestine has the surface area of a tennis court! This is where food, vitamins, drugs and anything else gets absorbed into the body. Imagine a thin layer of bacteria spread across this massive surface. What these bugs produce can have an impact on health and disease.

A verdict from my clinic this morning. It is so hard for patients with #IBS / #SIBO . There is an ever increasing about of bad information out there. It can be so confusing and expensive.

Response to antibiotics in #IBS patients with #SIBO is more than double of those without SIBO (51% vs 23%, NNT=3, p<0.01)

At the beginning of 2024 we now have a really good understanding of how IBS develops from food poisoning and CdtB toxin. Just wait till you see how we fix it in this model (study is done and being published now).
