The major works to our flats by Haringey Council & its contractor Equans UK & Ireland include new front doors.

Since each door costs over £4,000, you'd think they'd first have considered whether residents could get furniture and white goods in or out through them.

We tried to fit a standard fridge box 60cm wide through one of the new doors.

But with handles jutting out on both sides, plus the letterbox, their 'effective clear width' is only about 55cm.

'Effective clear width' measures the straight unobstructed passage, so you'd need to deduct a few extra cm for the door frame and another 7cm for the door handle. At best, it's 45cm...
