The collapse of small towns across South Africa can, in part, be attributed to the collapse in their road network.

Wrong contractors appointed, no maintenance, lack of project management skills in Departments have all led to small town roads falling apart.

As South Africans we have developed a sense of humour as a coping mechanism for failed government like this tyre business in Lydenberg, Mpumalanga that thrives next to some of the worst roads in our country.

I am here on the R37 near Lydenberg in Mpumalanga inspect a 3km section of road that is currently on its 3rd contractor and the project is already stalling.

Great infrastructure needs a better tender system and real departmental project management to safeguard public money.
