The First Nations, Inuit and Métis of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service.

While some served with our fleets and the Royal Canadian Air Force, most would serve in the Canadian Army - earning at least 50 decorations for bravery during the war. 1/2

The Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) greatest contribution in the #SecondWorldWar (1939-1945) was the role it played in the Battle of the Atlantic, the grim and unrelenting struggle against the German U-boats.

When North Korea attacked the South on 25 June 1950, the Canadian government joined Allies in countering the attack under the auspices of the #UnitedNations (UN).

Today we mark National Indigenous Veterans Day and the as many as 12,000 aboriginal veterans who have served in the 20th century. PO1 (retired) Victor Flett is one such member. From a family of service members he was a sonar man during the Korean War and now lives in Victoria.

On November 11, S3 William Ryan Black will serve as Royal Canadian Navy Sentry at the national Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa.

He was chosen for this honour as part of the Remembrance Day Sentry Program, learn more here: canada.ca/en/department-…
