The erosion of academic freedom leads to significant gaps in knowledge, and potentially to serious and long-term damage to policy and practice.

Dr Sahra Taylor (intl politics), was a ring-leader in the witch-hunt against Dr Laura Favaro, claiming her work was an “attack piece on trans people [and] our existences” that has “clearly caused harm to many interviewed”.

First up Natacha Kennedy/Mark Hellen (transgender studies) who publishes joint papers with himself (much good academic practice there) and plotted to accuse non-compliant professors of hate crime to try to have them ousted from their jobs.

This is how I read the bullshit 'middle ground' in the gender debate now being spoken og. Some of these women weren't evil bigots (but some were). Some of these children weren't born in the wrong body (but some were). Some of you didn't deserve years of hounding (but some did). >

My grandma, who lived near Pendle Hill, once told me that the thing about the Pendle witches was 'they weren't all real witches. Some of them were just women people didn't like'. Which obviously made me think that some of them *were* actual witches (I hadn't before). >

Or to worry about people you like getting 'tainted' by association with you. Or to see the first comment in response to your book being on an award shortlist is 'urgh, a terf!' It is just constant, the sense of having been marked.

Because none of the women I know deserved it any more than they do - even less, since those denounced as terfs haven't been glibly, mindlessly, self-servingly supporting some incredibly harmful politics and practices simply in order to look (but not be) kind.

Their lives haven't been affected in any way and while I don't want them to feel every room *they* enter to talk about their books is one in which they risk being accused of genocide, I want them to think about how that might feel. >

They don't think they're part of the 'toxic culture' or 'polarisation', but they absolutely are. Because they look at women being screamed at, think 'I don't want to be one of those women' and issue a little statement to make those screaming feel that bit more entitled. >
