Root-knot nematodes don't always cause galls! There are no galls on these calla lily roots. However, inside these small brown spots are M. incognita females.

Southern root-knot (SRK) nematode is a major problem for Southern soybean farmers. Experts have mapped the distribution of SRK in counties that may rotate to soybeans, giving farmers and their crop advisors a better idea of its presence. thescncoalition.com/news/2023/07/2…

It can be difficult to maintain #nematode cultures in the #greenhouse in winter. However, #soybean cyst #nematode ( #SCN ) doesn’t have a problem - these cultures were started with intact cysts (not eggs!) on 11/2/23 and by 12/20/23, you can easily see white females on the roots!

A sting #nematode female recovered from a southern Georgia #cotton field. These nematodes are usually found in soils with at least 85% sand content and the damage threshold per 100cc #soil is very low - usually between 1-5 nematodes at fall sampling.

Looks can be deceiving: while the ring #nematode (red arrow) appears much more menacing than the root-knot nematode (yellow arrow), which is considered the most economically important plant-parasitic nematode worldwide? Winner: root-knot! 🏆🪱

Sorghum is an excellent host for root-knot #nematode , Meloidogyne incognita. Inoculated with 16,500 juveniles in a greenhouse test, the population density soared to over 2 million upon test termination 😱

Some #nematodes (ex: root-knot) reproduce via parthenogenesis (asexual) reproduction) and others via amphimixis/sexual reproduction (ex: SCN, sting, lance). In the latter, it’s common to see both males and females in the same sample - such as this male and female lance nematode.
