This week, the IUCN Red List released the first comprehensive assessment of #freshwater fish species at the #COP28UN Climate Conference. The assessment found that 25% of these fishes are threatened with #extinction

Overall, we provide a positive outlook for the NRL, but warn that ambitious national implementation and cooperation with economic sectors, such as agriculture, will eventually determine the success of nature restoration in Europe.

Key to the implementation will be the cooperation with land users, in particular with agriculture. Agriculture directly benefits from healthy soils and pollinator populations and from increased water storage capacity in the landscape that are all targets of the NRL.

The NRL avoids pitfalls that obstruct the implementation of EU regulations, showing that the Commission learned from past experiences. The NRL sets ambitious targets and timelines, implementation steps are clearly laid out. It does not need to be transposed into national law.

The final vote of the EU Parliament on the “nature restoration law” (NRL) is still awaited, but the text has been agreed. In a paper that just appeared in Science Magazine we analyse the opportunities and threats the NRL will be facing. A thread.
