If you haven’t seen the Labour Party training video from 1997 you haven’t seen possibly the funniest political joke going

We let globalisation destroy most of Britains industry, in the mining communities many men lost their jobs at 50 and never worked again before dying young of industrial disease. Thousands of lives destroyed. Only to be patronised by the middle class intelligentsia like this.

Utterly naive. The party that was founded to represent the poor in America screwed them for decades.

They have every right to be angry, as do the towns of Britain that Labour abandoned for years and has no plans to help even now.

This is about CLASS not ethnicity.

Inequality in the UK is overwhelmingly *within* generations, not between them. .

Not about old vs young/'privileged boomers', but income and wealth inequality.

(As I've been saying for last decade..)

Housing wealth inequality *within* generations is growing

As ever, John Burn-Murdoch leaves me wondering “why didn’t I make that chart?”

In the talk about the lucky half getting parental help remember: most get little but a few get a lot! (see Institute for Fiscal Studies chart from me & Bee Boileau)

Labour has finally figured out that it has urban seats down so safely that it can't lose them. Now it just needs to tax them.

Another article after yesterday's repeating the anguished howl 'how can Labour not recognise that the 400,000 Guardian readers are the most important voters with the most important and correct opinions, living in the most important places in the country'

Three weeks today the North East of England elects its first mayor. Here’s my piece from last year on why I’m optimistic that this can make a difference to a place that’s had a difficult last 100 years … unherd.com/2023/01/the-no…

“There is no greater modern illusion, even fraud, than the use of the single term work to cover what for some is, as noted, dreary, painful or socially demeaning and what for others is enjoyable, socially reputable and economically rewarding.” (Galbraith 1992: 33)
