Hayao Miyazaki didn't go to the in 2003 because of his opposition to the catastrophic inhumanity of the Iraq War. if only we could know why he wasn't at the 2024 Oscars either.

Unpopular take but the directing/actress categories feel correct to me. BARBIE's biggest triumph is that it exists and at an elevated level - the work of very very good producing, which is what a BP nom stands for and should be.

if i were a festival programmer or organizer, i would see this as a space of opportunity instead of a limitation…

if at their core festivals are to films to new audiences, this is a moment to move the public’s relationship to film’s essence instead of primarily who’s in it.

The Hollywood labor actions put the lie to the right-wing canard that Hollywood is liberal. Much of the talent might be, but once you get past a certain pay scale there are a ton of full-on MAGA people, plus execs who are no more 'liberal' than the president of a logging company.

Brief midyear movie-biz thread: It is hard to overstate the degree to which Hollywood is now looking to three movies--Mission: Impossible 7, Barbie, and Oppenheimer--not only to succeed, but to solve industry problems that no three films can solve. 1/

“I cannot believe I am standing here, pleading with you not to spend the tax dollars of a Black city, to tear down a forest in a Black neighborhood, to increase the policing & caging of more Black people. All this in a city with Black leadership. It breaks my heart.”

I'm incredibly proud of how transparent our union is. In the Writers Guild of America West's strike announcement, we included a list of our proposals, and the AMPTP's responses. Read it for yourself: it explains in black and white we're forced to go on strike.

What if New York City didn't have to pit libraries against schools, or parks against homeless services?

What if we diverted one single day of NYPD spending - a whopping $29 million - to be used in ways to actually help New Yorkers?
