A great study (and accompanying, easily digestible blog post) outlining the importance of exposing students to increasingly complex texts, and the incredible value of morphological awareness. Worth the read. ⤵️

'We found that around 40% of words used in children’s books do not appear on BBC television programmes aimed at children of the same age.'
'The large numbers of unfamiliar words mean that books present a unique opportunity for enhancing children’s vocabulary.'

Did you know? 'more than 1/3 of words in books for young pple aged 13-16 do not occur in books targeting older primary school children. This means that reading is likely to continue to pose a challenge as children grow older' Such an interesting study.

Does anyone know how Flesch Reading Ease scores were mapped to US grade levels? The use of these grade level mappings seems ubiquitous but I can't find any actual reference to how or when that mapping was done.

Very interesting paper!

Phonics + morphology for the best chance as kids progress through stages of children’s books & will frequently encounter unfamiliar words.

(Sight recognition of 100 most common only a small help.)

Also: important to encourage/support wide reading!

What words do children encounter when they read independently? Read our new QJEP paper analysing the language in children's books (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/17…); and for an accessible blog post (rastlelab.com/post/what-word…). Congrats to lead author Maria Korochkina!
