Rain's so desperately needed - see AAN Afghanistan's recent report on farming after three years of drought. But the dried-out earth makes many places even more vulnerble to flooding if there's heavy rain or sudden snowmelt.

Sad news today: the veteran BBC Kabul driver, Haji Sahb, has died. He looked after correspondents in the 1990s and early 2000s, crossed frontlines, watched our backs as we interviewed men with guns, found safe places to stay on long journeys, a stalwart presence always.

Charlie Herbert ICRC I asked ICRC about both. Was told: Hamas denied it access to hostages in Gaza. Israel has denied ICRC access to Palestinian detainees in Israel since 7 October.
