These changes won't bring my mother's son back, but they can pave the way for a correctional system that directs those with mental health challenges to appropriate care facilities, rather than delivering them back to their families in a coffin.

7/7 For his sister, Pelatin, Soleiman gave her the art of poetry, she said — a medium she has channelled her grief into. For Soli’s eldest brother, Yusuf, he taught him the benefits of being a man of faith.

6/7 In many ways, Soleiman’s presence remains alive in the family’s day-to-day. Maryam donates to charities helping kids to read and organizations helping those with mental illnesses. He taught his brother, Sam, how to drive and tutored Ali, his youngest brother, in math.

5/7 Maryam recalls that Soleiman, who would have been 38 on January 1, was adamant about making sure guests in their home were greeted properly and never without tea, pistachios and fruits. He was both hospitable and well-organized.

4/7 “I have a sister who gets angry (with me) when I don’t listen to others a lot, except Soleiman. But he changed my life,” Maryam said, adding he was the smartest person in the family. He would also give his mom advice on life’s precarious situations and intricate concepts.

3/7 Soleiman retained his identity in many ways even after his schizophrenia diagnosis. One example is that he would play chess with two people on two different boards at the same time. He would also quiz his siblings on the Qur’an, with both loving and playful intentions.
