Much of cancel culture 'works' (as in, it has the intended effect) not merely because the attack was effective but because the victim adopts, for posterity, that exact identity: of a victim.

Exactly so. There is real, tangible loss associated with dissenting. But the greatest loss, the true aim of the enemy, is to make you abandon your work. “Let no man take your crown.”
