I haven't shared much about this, but I've been quietly coaching a few freelance writers, and my first testimonial proves that I need to offer this to a wider group of people.
If you want to launch or boost your freelance writing career, I can help. Let's talk!

What's the best way to book a vacation rental if I want to avoid Airb*b, VR*O, and similar sites? I really hate the shadiness, fees, and endless rules. I typically stay in hotels, but I need a place for 5 people for this trip.

I heard of a freelance strategy that involves keeping money in a high-yield savings account instead of paying quarterly taxes, then paying all taxes at once the next year. My saving account pays 5.75% interest, so this makes sense to me, but feels weird. Is anyone doing this?

Fascinating article on the role of freelancers in the future of work. I've left clients I used to love working with when they started treating me more like staff than a consultant. Managers need to understand the differences in freelancers vs employees.

When a freelance writer sends you a link to a story they've written, please don't ask them to make changes to the piece unless something's inaccurate! We don't control the final versions and we risk damaging relationships with our editors forwarding these requests.

Yikes! What a missed opportunity! This is the exact type of mistake I'm trying to help people avoid making through my media coaching service. jonimsweet.com/media-coaching

I would like us to move away from the model of hooking every story to something ‘timely’. I don’t care more or less about a city guide bc a book based there was published 50 years ago, or they won an award most have never heard of.

Some things are interesting for their own sake.

The gall to offer writers $20/hour to train AI to replicate and devalue their work. I've been getting 'job offers' for this lately and I would sooner eat cat food before saying yes to any of them. (I know times are tough, but I really hope that other writers are not saying yes!)

Journalism is about craft, not expertise. Business reporters aren't expected to have experience running companies, sports journalists aren't required to be athletes. Travel writers shouldn't be expected to have local expertise to cover a destination.

Unpopular opinion, but I think it's so short-sighted to only have locals covering their homes. The locals' perspective tells one story and an outsider tells another, both of which have their place in travel storytelling.
