1955: It's UT Austin's Longhorn Band in a parade through downtown Austin, marching in cowboy boots and bright orange uniforms, along with a car decal from the same era.

Then and now.

1933 and 2024: Looking down University Avenue toward UT Austin's Littlefield Fountain and either Old Main or the current Main Building and Tower. The view has changed a bit, and there was more parking back then.

1970: UT Austin's new East Mall Fountain with the Geology Building (now the Jackson School of Geosciences) behind it. That's one of the original, non-air conditioned shuttle buses waiting in front. Instead of pulling a cord, students usually just yelled, 'Next stop, please!'

1959: Before the planters were added in the mid-1970s, UT Austin's West Mall was mostly grass. In the springtime leading up to campus elections, it was usually home to large campaign signs, some of them a couple of stories tall.

2007: UT Austin's Perry-Castaneda Library opened in 1977 with nine acres of carpeting and 70 miles of bookshelves. As Monday is the last class day for the spring semester and final exams start next Thursday, the PCL is a popular and busy place.

1972: At UT Austin's Clark Field no. 2 - where the Bass Concert Hall is today - the outfield scoreboard was manually operated. A push-button transmitter behind home plate was used to relay ball and strike counts, and runs, to a receiver at the scoreboard, which was then updated.

1955: Looking north from the UT Austin Tower. The road leading from Mary Gearing Hall was originally to be the North Mall, but the Great Depression, World War II, and a post-war enrollment jump forced a change in plans. That's Kinsolving Dorm under construction at upper left.

1962: On UT Austin's McCombs School of Business building are 50 stylish ceramic panels. The raised circles symbolized buttons, as many inventions of the 1950s – from computers to vending machines – changed the modern world into what was then called a β€œpush button society.”

Did you know?

April 23, 1916: To mark the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, UT Austin held an unmatched campus-wide pageant and Renaissance festival that involved every academic department - student, faculty, and staff.

1962: UT Austin's Undergraduate Library and Academic Center under construction. In the 1950s - '60s, about 15 universities (including Harvard, Cornell, and Michigan) built libraries specifically to help undergraduate students with research and have easy access to books.

Happy Earth Day, y'all! A 2015 snapshot of the Earth and moon together.

'That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.' - Carl Sagan

Did you know? When the UT Austin Alumni Center opened in April 1965, the original carpeting was an alternating pattern of wavy U's and T's.

Groovy, man. Far out.

Happy 139th Birthday to UT Austin's baseball team and the University colors!

April 21, 1885: UT students formed their first ever baseball team and played Southwestern University, while fans wore orange and white ribbons.

1924: UT Austin women students do calisthenics in a P.E. class a century ago. The women's gym was a temporary pinewood structure about where the Texas Union stands today, and was also the scene of all-University dances before Gregory Gym and the Union arrived in the 1930s.
