Igor Shesterkin has been the best goalie in the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the last 3 years, and there isn’t a close 2nd.

He’s doing it with exceptional details and two key traits.

Breaking it all down, with film examples, on The Athletic NHL ⤵️

On today's The Athletic NHL Hockey Show with Ian Mendes and me:

– We tee up Game 7

– Down Goes Brown and I debate whether replay should even exist in the NHL

– Jesse Granger on whether or not goaltending is actually a figment of our imagination

Loving Kevin Weekes’ bits of technical goalie insight on the broadcast!

Skinner hasn’t been busy but he’s looked good when called upon.

The Stars won in double overtime to advance, so in theory Mason Marchment's overturned goal doesn't matter that much.

Except it does for different reasons. On goalie interference and its inconsistencies that are consistently an issue.

Florida’s Aleksander Barkov wins the Selke Trophy

William Karlsson finished 18th with 9 votes.

This was my ballot:

1. Aleksander Barkov
2. Adam Lowry
3. Seth Jarvis
4. Roope Hintz
5. Anze Kopitar

In my opinion, Makar caused Georgiev more problems than Duchene did.

Duchene was set up fairly outside the blue paint. Georgiev got as close as he could to him, then Makar pushed Duchene into Georgiev.

Oettinger makes positioning and staying on angle look so damn effortless.

It is definitely not, and goes under appreciated because he makes it look so easy.

Outstanding opening period by Jake Oettinger.

His reflexes have been on point, making a couple great reactionary stops.

What a play!

Also, I can’t stop laughing at the distance he traveled sliding on his stomach before making it.

It looks like the supreme confidence Igor Shesterkin has played with in these playoffs has faded.

That Aho partial breakaway was the most passive he’s looked in the postseason.

You know when you try to run in a dream, but just can’t go anywhere?

It looked like Freddie Andersen just went through the goaltending version of that. His skates just kept getting wider and wider, and he never found his edges or balance.

Weird
