October 2023, Iceland vs May 2024, England.

Since October, it’s fair to say the northern lights have become a special interest. So to see them from my garden on Friday night (& not being freezing cold!) was euphoric.

Autistic joy is beautiful.

So many people are enjoying the Aurorae, both Northern (Borealis) and Southern (Australis!). But, surely you want to know how amazing the science is? This short🧵is about the atomic origins of the green and red light. 1/10

After the disapointment of last night, there's still lots of solar activity so potential tonight (though cloud/showers may be a problem for some).

Unlikely to be as good as Friday night but geomagnetic levels of severe (G4) are forecast.

Staring at the night sky for two hours whilst lying on the grass in the middle of nowhere was so peaceful. It was so quiet. Our planet is beautiful.

Heading home now as not looking likely!

Everyone focused on the aurora spotting apps/activity levels. In Iceland, they told us to ignore this. Somewhere dark/less light pollution, no cloud coverage and patience. Sometimes you’d see them when activity levels weren’t promising! So don’t give up if your app isn’t hopeful.

The feeling of excitement building up for tonight is the closest feeling to being a child waiting for Santa.

As you watch the Aurora this evening, it’s worth reflecting that you’re getting a rare direct glimpse of the power of Nature. Those charged particles causing the atmosphere to glow came from a sunspot complex 17 times the diameter of Earth and traveled across 90 million miles at…

Something is making me think that the Iceland tourism industry might take a slight hit after this weekend…
