Academia never says 'do something creative / take a risk'
1. Students: don't be too ambitious.
2. Postdocs: work on projects with a high feasibility
3. Asst professors: play it safe, get tenure
4. Professors: don't lose funding, go with the paradigm.
As told to us by Keith Yamamoto

(True story; wish it was more common)
Junior faculty: None of my proposals are being funded. I’m worried..
Dept. Chair: Why not take a 6 month rest from grant writing?
Junior faculty: But I need to get a grant..
Chair: Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. Just focus on the science.

'Timed ignorance' is a night science trick: coming into a field you bring new angles & find new questions; it's a kind of generative ignorance. But then it becomes inhibiting & you need to learn the field deeply to understand what's known. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/uri… uri alon

How should we inspire kids about the creativity involved in science? I talked with 6th graders today about our lab's research and I described how science is as creative as music & painting. All of them have both the executive ('day') modes, and the wild & creative ('night') mode.

The only 3 things that matter about how you deliver your talk are clarity, clarity and clarity.
Before investing any precious time in polishing slides, just be clear about what you want to say.

Fly biologists give the best gene names!
'We named this gene degrees of kevin bacon (dokb) after the parlor game “6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon” where participants choose a [..] Hollywood actor & determine the shortest path that connects that individual to Kevin Bacon via film roles.'

George Church summarizes the power of the mentee-mentor team in this fun podcast episode ‘what's nice is if you combine the experience of an adult, even a senior adult, with the attitude of a child, that's far better than either one of them separately.’

de Bono famously divided thinking into categories each identified with its own colored metaphorical 'thinking hat'.
What is most interesting is the book's last sentence: 'In the end, all decisions are really ‘red hat’. We lay out the factors but the final decision is emotional.'

I wish I heard this George Church (george church) podcast episode when I was a grad student!
1. You can change the world, as long as you don't care who gets credit.
2. The idea is not to never fail, it is to fail a million times a day.
3. Embrace the outlier!
