de Bono famously divided thinking into categories each identified with its own colored metaphorical 'thinking hat'.
What is most interesting is the book's last sentence: 'In the end, all decisions are really β€˜red hat’. We lay out the factors but the final decision is emotional.'

I wish I heard this George Church (george church) podcast episode when I was a grad student!
1. You can change the world, as long as you don't care who gets credit.
2. The idea is not to never fail, it is to fail a million times a day.
3. Embrace the outlier!

An untaught but important rule for thriving in academia is β€˜strategic synergy’ (or β€˜two birds with one stone’). Need to give a talk on something? Use it as a practice for another presentation. Need to write a grant progress report? Use it as a draft for a review you are writing.

How should we make time for the creative side of scientific process? Check out this 1 hour talk that Martin and I gave about 'night science'.

It’s strange that we use the same word β€˜science’ to mean both the results of science and the process of actually doing science..

scientific recharge, thinking about evolution but in 'other' contexts, like societies, language, cognition, materials, AI. had fascinating conversations branching off shared principles we think about with genes and species. thanks ⁦Itai Yanai πŸ’”β© and colleagues for organizing!

You could write the entire history of science in the last 50 years in terms of discoveries from unfunded projects.

Some of the best discoveries emerge from projects in which there really was not a very detailed plan initially.

A note to those asking aggressive questions in seminars: you might imagine that that is better than a seminar with a silent audience. But people are only silent because of the aggressive atmosphere and without you there it would have been an interesting and enlightening session.

What is real magic? This was Daniel Dennett's favorite quote. He was always interested in exposing the real magic of consciousness (and free will, biological design, and creativity) for the large bag of tricks that it actually is.

The problem with doing science is that - in the moment - you can never be sure whether you’re on the right track or if you really don’t know what you’re doing, or both..

Dan Dennett, my favorite philosopher, died today 😒
Dan tackled the biggest questions around: what is consciousness, do we have free will, how does evolutionary adaptation occur? I miss him already.

A secret superpower of a lab with more than one research topic is that group meetings are a safe space for naive questions - because there are many β€˜outsiders’ - and a big idea tends to start out as a naive question.

The most important turning points in the project don’t usually happen at the bench or workstation but actually when you’re not working on it directly at all and just talking about it with a friend or colleague.
