What is most interesting is the book's last sentence: 'In the end, all decisions are really ‘red hat’. We lay out the factors but the final decision is emotional.'

You could write the entire history of science in the last 50 years in terms of discoveries from unfunded projects.

Some of the best discoveries emerge from projects in which there really was not a very detailed plan initially.

A note to those asking aggressive questions in seminars: you might imagine that that is better than a seminar with a silent audience. But people are only silent because of the aggressive atmosphere and without you there it would have been an interesting and enlightening session.

What is real magic? This was Daniel Dennett's favorite quote. He was always interested in exposing the real magic of consciousness (and free will, biological design, and creativity) for the large bag of tricks that it actually is.
