Iain McMullen - Football and the First World War There's a nice family story here. The Watford goalkeeper is Reg 'Skilly' Williams. His great-great-grandson is Jack Grieves, a young player who has broken into Watford's first-team squad and made four appearances to date.

Derby County host Leicester City on 15 April 1939. The film shows the Baseball Ground in all its glory but I reckon there’s definitely more crammed in than the official recorded attendance of 11,922… The match finished 1-1. Britain would be at war again five months later.

Sandy Turnbull was killed during the 8th East Surreys attack at Chérisy on this day in 1917. A star for both Manchester clubs, and not without his controversies, the Scot is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. We visit each year to pay our respects.
