Today in 1944, at Hardway in Gosport, on England's south coast, workers lay 'chocolate block' concrete sections. They're strengthening the beach surface to allow loading of landing ships with heavy vehicles, ahead of the D-Day invasion.

Today in 1944, this photo of American fighter ace Robert J Rankin is approved for publication. Three days earlier, while flying his P-47 Thunderbolt, Rankin had shot down five Messerschmitt 109s while escorting a bomber mission to Germany.

#OTD in 1919 Edith Cavell's funeral took place at Westminster Abbey. William Hatherall painted the scene as part of Imperial War Museums's Women's Work Section. The painting has its own war history; in August 1939 it was relocated from London when IWM activated its evacuation plan #FWW #SWW
