On 24 April, 1916, Irish republicans seized notable buildings in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic in what became known as the Easter Rising.

The story of Northern Ireland is complicated. Whilst the origins of the Troubles can be traced back hundreds of years, the Battle of the Bogside in August 1969 is often considered the start of the 30 year conflict.
