On 16 April 1746, the Battle of Culloden took place between the Jacobites and a British government force under the Duke of Cumberland. Ending in in defeat for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, it would be their last attempt to reinstate the Stuarts to the British throne.

In the early hours of 15 April 1912, RMS Titanic sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage. She was the largest ship afloat at the time and was carrying an estimated 2,224 people on board.⁠ Only around 710 people survived the disaster.⁠
