#ArtAdventCalendar Day 16 is a very small reindeer from September last year. Part of a set of thirty animals, one for each day of the month, all 1' square.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 15.
Another old ink & gouache piece from 2006. Like Day 5, this was made into a 3-panel concertina Christmas card.
The Coventry Carol tells the story of the Massacre of the Innocents, & its mournful, minor key lullaby makes it a favourite of mine.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14.
Another from my work for Katie Melua's 'In Winter' album, 2016. This illustration accompanies the album's arrangement of the Nunc Dimittis from Sergei Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil. Ink & gouache.
Not as successful as I'd envisaged, but hey, ho.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 11.
From 2014, the 1st spread of Jingle Bells, the 2nd of my silhouette Christmas books published by Walker Books. The book illustrates the first verse and chorus of the now famous 1857 song composed by James Lord Pierpont and ends with a pop-up.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 10.
From 2014, Egret on Snowy Branch. Ink, 64 Γ 89 mm (2.5 Γ 3.5': ACEO). Inspired by Ohara Koson.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 9.
Not so overtly wintry as all the others so far, but I declare that birds are for all seasons. Low relief paper sculpture of a pigeon wing. I made a mistake with the number of coverts, but I hope to make a better one in future.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 8.
Returning to the work I did for Katie Melua's 'In Winter' album, 2016 (see Days 1&2), illustration for 'A Time to Buy.' Watercolour, ink & gouache. Gentle satire amid the splendours of commercial Christmas in a familiar scene around this time of year.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 13 (still a day behind).
Oh, look, I found another wintry piece that isn't a silhouette!
From 2007, illustration for Jane Austen's Emma, published by The Folio Society. The only good piece among the seven(?) I managed for that book.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 7.
Another ancient piece from 2004. Shakespeareβs The Winterβs Tale, Act V, Scene III. Ink & watercolour, 297 mm square. The penitent King Leontes is reunited with his supposedly dead queen, Hermione, whose 'statue' comes to life as he embraces her.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 6.
To coincide with St. Nicholas Day, a detail of an illustration from one of my earliest books, Clement C. Moore's The Night Before Christmas, 2007. Ink & gouache.
I gave Moore's 'St. Nick' a staff recalling a bishop's crozier in a nod to his origins.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 5.
Part of an ~ancient~ piece from 2005 and another Aesop tale, this is the centre of a three-panel gatefold Christmas card retelling the story of The Man & the Satyr. Ink and watercolour.
It's the closest thing I have to a Krampus for this evening. π
