Leyendecker, re academic study: 'If I learned anything it was that a picture is really only valuable for the thought behind it. There is little talk of handling and of the catch tricks of the trade, and much emphasis upon a deep and serious significance in everything attempted.'

Edwin Austin Abbey’s Daughters of King Lear illustrates the moment Cordelia departs from her sisters. It was painted for exhibition at the Royal Academy.
What do the terms 'Fine Art' and 'Illustration' mean, and does the distinction matter? jamesgurney.substack.com/p/fine-art-vs-…

What makes a good painting demo? I want to hear from veteran teachers (who have done a lot) and students (who have watched a lot). What were the best ones you've seen (OK to name names). Also, what made the bad ones bad? (please, without naming names). speakpipe.com/AskJamesGurney

What would it feel like to interact with an AI system that took more initiative?
Instead of humans always asking the questions, it would be surprising (and scary) to have the AI start discussions, perhaps reviving and connecting earlier topics, or pursuing its own 'curiosity.'

Advice to a young artist: 'Work all for study, and none for either exhibition or commendation. As long as you fear criticism you will hedge while making experiments. So don't work for anything but your own progress.' —Louis Agassiz Fuertes (Hard to do in age of social media.)
